Club Cycle Event: Isle of Cumbrae

Isle of Cumbrae cyclists

As our club session on the 1st August was cancelled due to a hockey camp taking place on that date, a club cycle run was arranged on the Isle of Cumbrae for all levels of cycling ability.

As arranged, we met at the Ferry terminal in Largs at 10.30 am. It was raining when we left Largs but the sun soon came out and we had glorious weather for the cycle round Cumbrae. Most cycled twice round the island with a few going round three times.

Everyone really enjoyed the outing and we’re looking forward to a return trip next year!

Junior Club Captain

At a recent committee meeting the suggestion was made that any younger club member willing to put themself forward for the committee should be offered the post of Junior Club Captain as being on the committee would also mean that they were in a position to advise the younger membership. Accordingly Euan C was offered and accepted the position of Junior Club Captain.

Awards Night 2010

The annual 2010 Awards Night was held at the Tournament Cafe, Eglington Park on Saturday 5th June.

The awards started with each skater getting a certificate with their PBs for the 2009/2010 season.  The Club Championship awards were presented with Shelley T. in 3rd place, Shannon S. in 2nd place, with Craig M. taking the overall championship. In the Club Handicap competition, Stephen Q. was 3rd, with Fraser L. in 2nd place, and Connor M. taking this year’s title.

The coveted Janet McNicoll trophies for the most improved skaters were awarded next. Fiona T. was selected received the Award for Most Improved Girl. While Euan T received the award for Most Improved Boy.

The Skater of the Year, as selected by Coach Archie Marshall, was this year presented to Alison W. This was presented to Alison in recognition of her podium position at this year’s British Championships, and for being the inaugural winner of the Ladies Fitzroy Smith event.

Each year the skaters vote for their skater of the year. This was a closely fought category with lots of nominees, but the overall winner emerged as Fraser L..

The most closely contested competition of the year, is the Fall of the Year. In the passed this fall has occurred in European events, in national competitions or has even been caught on camera.  This year, however, apparently the best fall occurred in a quiet Friday morning session, without many witnesses. The stored passed around afterwards varied in detail, but all agreed it was a worthy candidate for the Fall of the Year competition.  Congratulations to Euan T.

British Short Track Championships 2010

12 Flyers headed down to Nottingham for the 2010 British Championships. After a weekend of eventful racing, the Flyers returned with 3 medals, with 2 skaters just missing out in 4th place.

Stewart L took the Silver in the very competitive Masters section. Craig M. came a close 4th in the Junior men, with Roy W. also just missing out on a podium place in the Juvenile Boys.

Well done to all flyers competed, including FionaFrazer, Samantha, Shannon, Shelley, Rosslyn and Euan.
